It’s only a few days left till Halloween! Have you found your costume yet? If not, then you may want to start your search. After all, I’m sure there are a lot of stores selling the right costumes for you. You’ve got a whole lot of choices!
But then, there are things you have to consider when picking the right costume. One of them is that they shouldn’t be offensive to certain groups or to society as a whole. Here, we discuss some Halloween costumes which you need to avoid.
- Racial stereotypes
You may find it funny wearing that sombrero and poncho while slapping on a huge mustache, but to others, it may appear as if you’re poking fun at a certain culture. This is why you should avoid costumes which stereotypically depict a certain race or ethnicity.
- Costumes about a past tragedy
Would you dress up as a runner during the Boston Marathon bombings as shown above? I wouldn’t think so. The fact that it has caused much uproar makes it pretty clear that you should err on the safe side and stay away from similar costumes. Trust me, it won’t be too funny when everyone’s raging at you.
- Costumes depicting a controversial group or party
Remember Prince Harry’s Nazi attire? He may have found it harmless, but to those who lived through the horrors of war, it was a tasteless choice and it’s good that he apologized for the gaffe. It may not be detrimental for you to dress up as a member of—let’s say—the Ku Klux Klan, but everyone knows that it’s not exactly a good idea.
- Suggestive costumes
This may have to be the most obvious. Even though you’re an adult with an open mind, you really need to think twice about donning a costume with any sort of sexual connotation, so this territory is a no-go for you.
- Not exerting any effort in choosing a costume at all
If you’re going to a costume party, the host will surely expect you to dress up. If you just come along wearing a shabby t-shirt paired with jeans, you might not get an invite again! It’s not really that hard to find a suitable costume for as long as you don’t go overboard.
